WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards

The WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards was established in 2011 to recognize and promote outstanding ICT and e-Government practices of cities and local governments around the world. Through this regular international competition, the WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards aims to encourage the incorporation of innovative ICT for the enhancement of administrative efficiency; increase citizens’ access to public services; and share knowledge on Smart City strategies actively. The WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards Panel of Judges determine the winners in each of the five specific WeGO Awards Categories of (1) Open City, (2) Digital Inclusion, (3) Innovative Smart City, (4) Sustainable City, (5) e-Government Service, and (6) Cooperative City.   


The WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards has been traditionally held in the same year as the WeGO General Assembly and has developed into a popular competition in the international community. WeGO highly encourages cities and local governments to participate in this event and share their e-Government successes and achievements.

About the WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards


History
The 1st WeGO Awards was officially launched and received great international attention at the 1st WeGO Awards Ceremony held at the 2nd WeGO General Assembly on November 13, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. The Awards enjoyed even wider recognition at the 2nd WeGO Awards Ceremony held at the 3rd WeGO General Assembly on November 13, 2014 in Chengdu, China.
In 2016, The WeGO Awards was renamed to the WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards in order to stay up to date with the latest global trends. Likewise, the different award categories were also modified to reflect these new technological developments. The 3rd WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards Ceremony will be held during the 4th WeGO General Assembly in June 2017 in Ulyanovsk Region, Russia!


Eligibility

The WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards are open to all cities and local governments around the world, WeGO members and non-members alike.


Categories

The WeGO Awards are given in the following six (6) categories:

1. Open City
- Administrative Transparency
- Open Data

2. Digital Inclusion
- Citizen Engagement
- Civic Participation
- Bridging Digital Divide

3. Innovative Smart City
- Innovations using ICTs in Urban Development in Security, Disaster, Transport, Wase, Envrionment, Energy, Welfare, and Culture
- Open Data

4. Sustainable City
- Addressing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Impact on Sustainability

5. e-Government Service
- Quality, Effectiveness of Public Services
6. Cooperative City
- Internal/ External Integration of City, Whole-of-Government Approach, City-to-City, Inter-Departmental Relationships, Central vs Local, etc.

Prizes

The top two submissions in each of the six categories are honored with the Gold Award and Silver Award, respectively.  In the event that the competition is particularly fierce in any given year and the quality of the submissions are deemed to reflect excellence, an additional Special Mention may be awarded in each category.


Panel of Judges

The evaluation for the WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards is performed in two rounds by the international WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards Panel of Judges, which consists of twelve or fewer leading experts in e-Government, ICT, and Sustainable Development who are appointed by WeGO's President City from a pool of experts nominated by WeGO member cities and the WeGO Secretariat.


Evaluation Procedures

Phase 1: Online Application

Each application submitted by the deadline will be checked if it meets the terms and requirements of the WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards.


Phase 2: 1st Round Evaluation

For the first round of evaluations, the Panel of Judges will evaluate all submissions according to the applicable Judging Criteria for the relevant WeGO Smart Sustainable City Awards Category with ratings from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) for each Judging Criterion.  The five (5) top-rated submissions in each category will be selected to move on to the second round of evaluations.


Phase 3: 2nd Round Evaluation
In the second round of evaluations, the two (2) submissions with the highest number of votes from the judges in each Awards Category will be determined as the winners of the Gold Award and Silver Award.
